U.s. crude oil imports by country of origin

Crude oil includes imports for storage in the Stategic Petroleum Reserve. The Persian Gulf includes Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates. This chart breaks down U.S. oil imports by country of origin, from 1973 to 2018. Imports peaked in 2005 and declined until 2014, thanks to improvements in domestic production and reduced demand. Imports from Iraq, Venezuela, and Mexico were curtailed the most during this period. Imports from Canada, however, have been rising steadily since 1981.
